National Foundation Day (Japan)

National Foundation Day is a Japanese national holiday observed on February 11th to reflect on the founding of the nation and nurture a love for the country. The date derives from the legendary accession of Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor, in 660 BC as recorded in the chronicle Nihon Shoki, converted to the modern calendar. Known as Kigensetsu before World War II, the holiday was re-established under its current name in 1966 and first observed in 1967. Shrines across Japan hold rituals, and commemorative ceremonies and parades take place in many cities.
