The Emperor's Birthday is a Japanese national holiday celebrating the birthday of the reigning emperor, currently observed on February 23rd for Emperor Naruhito. The Imperial Palace opens for a public greeting event, where the imperial family appears on the balcony before well-wishers. The date moves with each imperial succession: it fell on April 29th during the Showa era and on December 23rd during the Heisei era. Following the accession of May 2019, the holiday has been observed on February 23rd since 2020.
