Coming of Age Day (Japan)

Coming of Age Day is a Japanese national holiday held on the second Monday of January to congratulate and encourage young people who have reached adulthood. Municipalities across Japan hold coming-of-age ceremonies, where new adults gather dressed in colorful furisode kimono or formal suits. The holiday fell on January 15th until 1999 and moved to the second Monday of January in 2000 under the Happy Monday system. Although the age of legal adulthood was lowered to 18 in 2022, most municipalities continue to hold their ceremonies for those turning 20.
